Welcome to our web site!!
We are celebrating
our 40th year anniversary
On this home page we'll introduce our organization and highlight
important areas. | Meigs County The Meigs County chapter of ORTA, along the beautiful Ohio River, was organized on September 19, 1969 by Katherine
McCall of Portsmouth, Southeast District Director of ORTA. There were fourteen charter members, and the officers
that first year were Lucille Smith, president; Clara Lochary, vice-president; Gladys Hayman, secretary and Anna Hildore, treasurer.
Important early projects consisted of helping to establish
the Meigs County Council on Aging and contributing time and money toward the Carleton School for mentally challenged children. The group continues today with various noteworthy projects: retirement planning
seminars for active teachers; lending many volunteer hours to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program through the senior center;
tutoring in reading programs in the three local schools, and participating in a special Yesteryear program of teaching
old-time crafts such as quilting and breadmaking to fifth grade students in the county. Through our service projects, we supply
personal items for Serenity House for women, provide school supplies for the local needy students, and provide children's
books to God's Net for Christmas gifts. The group awards at least one $300 scholarship to a Meigs County student
majoring in education. Our group may have the oldest still-active volunteer in the state. Kathleen Scott, who is 103
years of age, quilts for others and plays the piano at her church each Sunday as she has done since she was 16 years of age. The present officers of the Meigs County chapter are: Gay Perrin, president; Joan
Cor der, vice-president; Janice Weber, secretary; and William Downie, treasurer. | Meigs County Chapter Meeting
