Meigs County

The Meigs County chapter of ORTA, along the beautiful Ohio River, was organized on September 19, 1969 by Katherine McCall of Portsmouth, Southeast District Director of ORTA.  There were fourteen charter members, and the officers that first year were Lucille Smith, president; Clara Lochary, vice-president; Gladys Hayman, secretary and Anna Hildore, treasurer.

Important early projects consisted of helping to establish the Meigs County Council on Aging and contributing time and money toward the Carleton School for mentally challenged children.

The group continues today with various noteworthy projects: retirement planning seminars for active teachers; lending many volunteer hours to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program through the senior center; tutoring in reading programs in the three local schools, and participating in a special Yesteryear program of teaching old-time crafts such as quilting and breadmaking to fifth grade students in the county. Through our service projects, we supply personal items for Serenity House for women, provide school supplies for the local needy students, and provide children's books to God's Net for Christmas gifts.  The group awards at least one $300 scholarship to a Meigs County student majoring in education.
Our group may have the oldest still-active volunteer in the state. Kathleen Scott, who is 103 years of age, quilts for others and plays the piano at her church each Sunday as she has done since she was 16 years of age.

The present officers of the Meigs County chapter are: Gay Perrin, president; Joan Cor der, vice-president; Janice Weber, secretary; and William Downie, treasurer.

It will be good to see all of you again; we haven't been together as a group since May.  Summer is always a busy time for everyone, and we hope you had a good one.

We missed seeing you at our first Meigs Retired Teachers' chapter meeting at 12:00, September 25th at the Trinity Church.  Our guest speaker was from the Office of Ohio Consumer Council.  There was a discussion and answer session on the Energy Legislation and How It Affects Us,  We also had musical entertainment from Maxine Whitehead, Dixie Sayre, and the members.

RSVP recently honored members at their 35th anniversary:  John Bentley 10 years and  Rosalie Story 15 years of volunteer service.

Did you see Kathleen Scott in the summer ORTA Quarterly?  She was playing the piano for the group singing at our May meeting.  Mrs. Scott will be 103 on October 6th.

We'll be looking for you to join us at the Wild Horse Cafe for the October 23rd meeting at 12:00.  Political candidates will be there to discuss Important Issues of the Election and concerns for our area.

It's time to keep your local and chapter dues current.  Please see William Downie for payment.

Don't forget our scholarship fund.  Every little bit helps the fund to grow, and it is great to help a future teacher with expenses.  In Memory of or Memorial contributions can be made to the scholarship fund.  Just mail your contibution to William Downie, 30770 Salser Rd, Racine, Ohio  45771 along with the name of the Remembered Person, the name and address of the person to receive the acknowledgement of your donation.
